How to send a dispute letter
- Write your letter citing the specific FCRA section (§605, §609, §611, §623) the dispute relies on.
- Print and sign the letter. Include copies (never originals) of supporting documents.
- Mail certified with return receipt requested. Keep the green card — it is your proof of delivery.
- Wait 30 days. Under FCRA §611(a)(1)(A), the bureau must complete its investigation within 30 days of receipt.
- If "verified" comes back, escalate with a §611(a)(6) Method of Verification request, then a direct §623 furnisher dispute, then a CFPB complaint.
Why certified mail matters
Online disputes are convenient but leave no independent legal record. Certified mail with return receipt creates a USPS-issued timestamp showing exactly when the bureau received your dispute. That start date is critical: the FCRA §611 30-day clock runs from receipt.
